Social Media Essay

Social medias intended purpose is to allow for easy communication. there are a variety of other benefits to social media usage. Social media usage can benefit all types of people but more effectively young people. I believe other benefits gained from social media usage are that young people develop a voice, young people collaborate, and young people explore and learn.
Social Networks hold discussions and debates of all subjects therefore giving young people the ability to speak their minds. As young people encounter these discussions, they develop a voice to discuss and debate. They transfer these benefits to functions successfully in a community and to better present themselves in public. These skills help people develop and keep friendships and gain trust within the network.
Social media helps support young people to come together and collaborate. Social media networks are designed for people to work, think, and act together. Young people also learn to listen and compromise. Some people may need help or advice in a social media network. Once young people develop confidence they will also gain experience to help others, therefore, becoming a productive member of society.
Social media usage encourages young people to explore and learn. If people are interested in certain things or ideas they are more likely to post them up on social networks. People with the same interests will form groups to further explore their interests. Once groups are made more doors open to explore and discover.
Social media provides many benefits other than an easier way of communication. People maintain connection and develop a voice through social media debates and discussions. Social media brings people together to work, think, and act coexistent. Social media encourages people to explore networks to discover new ideas and interests or simply expand their knowledge of their interest.

2B Or Not 2B Response

Summary: In the essay “2b or Not 2b”, David Crystal states his beliefs on texting. David first starts his essay with John Humphrys argument stating, “vandals who are doing to our language what Genghis Khan did to his neighbors 800 years ago. They are destroying it: pillaging our punctuation; savaging our sentences; raping our vocabulary. And they must be stopped.” David believes texting will not destroy communication but give it new dimension. David claims abbreviations have been used for hundreds of years and analyzed study proving that the number of abbreviations in a text message resulted in higher scores on reading and vocabulary tests. David Crystal believes its a new form of communication and is improving language rather than destroying it.

Response: I agree with David Crystal. I also believe texting may improve language. When people text they play with the words making them understandable in a different way. I believe it helps people understand the complexity of their own language and how to use that complexity to their advantage. I believe texting and abbreviations is a more efficient way to communicate.

Is Higher Education Worth The Price?

Summary: Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus questioned if colleges are really giving good value to the investments they receive, what are families exactly paying for, and what are individuals -and our society as a whole- gaining from higher education. Andrew and Claudia where determined to answer these questions. They examined studying institutions and interviewed higher-educations leaders, policy makers, and students from various colleges. Andrew and Claudia came to the conclusion that colleges were engaging in too many roles and showed lack of performance. Andrew and Claudia claim these colleges are staffed by casts of thousands and dedicated to everything from esoteric research to vocational training- and have lost track of their basic mission to challenge the minds of young people. They came up with ideas that could help reform such as universal enrollment, Andrew and Claudia state that for that to happen, professors must make an effort to reach their students. Also Andrew and Claudia propose that students should become more thoughtful and interesting people and should choose impractical studies for a wiser use of college. Andrew and Claudia give the idea that unlike a textbook, software can pose interactive questions, review answers, and tell students to try again, offering hints on where they may have gone wrong. Despite the colleges not doing their job well, Andrew and Claudia discovered some colleges they thought were exceeding their objectives. Colleges that had free tuitions, tripled african american enrollment, and even colleges that allowed you to contribute to labor 10 hours a week to substitute for tuition fees. In conclusion most colleges need some sort of reform to accomplish their roles well.

Response: I agree with Andrew and Claudia concluding that most colleges engage in roles and lack performance. I also agree that the majority of students waste their college investments and graduate with six figure debts. I believe the staff in colleges need to really engage with the students when class is in session. I believe students should read an abundance and receive some sort of interactive presentations. I believe students should have more fun and critical thinking lectures then long and boring lectures. So students actually want to learn new things and discover who they truly are as a person. I feel like college students now a days have a lot of built up stress because of their school’s lack of performance. I agree with Andrew and Claudia some reformation should be done to better shape our future generations.

Cowardly Acts

Summary:
In Crystal Palomino's mastery essay, she introduces multiple reasons fathers use an excuse to not fulfill their responsibility as a father. Palomino claims fathers leave their children because they are too much of a man, either feel like they aren't ready to take care of their child, or they feel like they shouldn't have to pay child support because the mother makes enough wages. Crystal's belief is if a man is a man then they wouldn't abandon their child in the first place, which would make it difficult for a mother to sustain a child on her own especially when the father refuses to pay child support. The author suggests you are not ready for sexual intercourse if you are not ready to face the consequences of raising a child.

Response:
I have previously encountered a cowardly act of the abandonment of a child. Therefore, I agree with the authors claims. Witnessing my cousin abandon his daughter made me see him as less of a man. He continues his lifestyle instead of raising his beautiful daughter. I believe she will grow up asking who's her father with a possibility of stressing why he left. My cousin makes my niece's mother's life more difficult and stressful. My niece's mother works her ass off to sustain her child because my cousin does not provide any type of currency or help for the child. So I believe when fathers leave it not only effects the child but the mother who now has to take on the role of two parents.

Appreciating the Moment by Jay Hasheider

Summary:
The author describes the bond between a father and son. They express mixed feelings of joy and sadness through their process of separation to college. A father and son shared a similar interest in baseball. Together they would watch the Arizona Cardinal games, their home town team. The connection they have towards the game is coming to an end. As they pack the remaining items they stop to watch the ending moments of their last Cardinals game together. They witnessed the Cardinals come back for a win. The last father son moment before ending the separation.

Response:
The author seems to conclude separation is lungful hoped but filled with mixed emotions. I think the bonds shared between father and son make the separation a more difficult and saddened moment. I was especially moved by the father and sons last special moment. I felt the joy they shared towards the game seeing the Cardinals come back for an amazing win. I Believe that was a great ending.
